A Sneak Peek to:

The Book of Ages

Book One,

Records of Caldonia

Prologue

Crack! Crash! Crumble! The tired, sweaty miners finally broke through the last, toughest wall.

“There’s obviously something valuable in here,” one noted. They had dug far and hoped to find at least something.

“Of course,” said another, “But…” then he was cut off by a noise that came from the end of the tunnel that they had broken into. Deep under the lake they dug, searching for precious metals, but instead they found a tunnel.

The noise grew louder and they saw a thick mist flow into the tunnel. Three shadows stood at the entrance to the next tunnel. The middle shadow’s shape came closer. Its head held a black crown and beneath, two red dots glowed in the dark.

“No… it can’t be true…” one miner whispered.

Scarytales are real!” another screamed.

“I have returned…” said a deep guttural voice, emanating from the crowned shadow. An arm extended, sword in hand, its blade flame-colored and swirling with dark power. In one sweep of its sword, the shadow knocked five of the miners back, dead.

Seeing what happened to their friends, the rest of the miners began to run. The shadow said, “The way is open, go.” When it had spoken, the other shadows glided forward, blades ready. None of the miners ever left the tunnel.

I am getting weary. My time is near. They have returned. They are growing in number. I cannot wait, I do not stop. The rumors abound and I fear they are true. I must pass it on. It cannot be found. There must always be a guardian. I will find one. It must, must not be found.

Chapter One

Off Nabbing

Jave had never wanted to be a thief, but his father’s expectations had always been strikingly different.

Deep in the heart of Kandras, an old city in the north, several people hid in a dark alleyway.

Jave,” one man called in the gruff tone of a thief.

He was tall and broad-shouldered, and had a dirty brown beard tangled about his face.

“Yes, father?” a lanky, tanned, twelve-year-old boy slid out from a corner to where the man sat.

Jave’s father reprimanded, “I told you not to call me that. You will address me by my name or by sir.”

“Yes sir,” Jave hastily said. He was always forgetting his father’s rules, as well as the thieves’. He turned his brown eyes downward.

 “Are you paying attention?”

Jave shook his head, ruffled his brown hair, and snapped out of his thoughts, “Yes, sir!”

“Good. Now take Bovlin here and go down to that old house on Southby,” waving his hand at another thief who stepped out of the shadows.

Jave answered quickly, “Yes sir!” and so they went nabbing.

When they were almost to the house, Bovlin said, “I’ll go in, so you keep lookout.”

“Why can’t I go in? I’ve never gone in before.” Jave asked, “and besides, when I play Sneakers and Snatchers against the other kids, I always win.”

“Aye, that’s true. Alright, go in, I’ll keep watch.”

Jave walked around the outside of the house, until he found an open window. He climbed in…

Jave was standing in what seemed to be a kitchen. He looked to the left and saw an open door leading to a service stairway. He snuck in, shutting the door very quietly. The stairs led up, thin and spiraling, with only room for one full grown man.

Jave climbed up, supposing that there was nobody there. When he came to the top, he saw a small door, just big enough for a person to enter. Opening it, he entered a wide bedroom, with the main door on the opposite side of the room. Just a few feet in front of Jave, was a bed and right beside the bed was a large chest. Jave walked up to it.

“Wow,” He whispered. Opening the chest, Jave saw lots of fancy clothes. Going deeper, he found several useless items; a cup, a stone and a rope. After he took out the other items, he pulled the rope, but then heard a, Click! He excitedly rummaged to the bottom of the chest and saw an open compartment, a secret lock, he realized.  He looked inside and what he saw amazed him…
